Welcome!

Green Futures is a non-profit educational and advocacy organization of people who share a concern for the protection of our shared environment.

All communities are entitled to clean air, clean water and sufficient open space for the continued presence of their indigenous wildlife and habitats.

Green Futures knows environmental stewardship leads to sustainable communities, stable economies and a healthy and productive life in harmony with nature.

We follow the axiom, “think global, act local”. We hope you do too.

Gray Squirrel

-MA Division of Fisheries and Wildlife

Grey squirrels are found everywhere in Massachusetts. They use both leaf nests and natural cavities for shelter and for rearing their young. Leaf nests are most commonly constructed in hardwoods; cavities in live trees are preferred. Gray squirrels usually breed at 10-14 months of age. Winter breeding occurs from January to February and summer breeding from May to July.

Gray squirrels have diverse diets, however, nuts such as oak acorns, hickory nuts, beechnuts, and walnuts may comprise three quarters of their annual diet. They also eat berries, fruits, seeds, buds, and flowers, as well as cultivated grains.
They are only active during midday in winter. Gray squirrels are tolerant of human presence and often live in urban or suburban areas with large, mature shade trees.
